What's OEE Application?

The ABB Ability™ Manufacturing Operations Management Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) Application uncovers hidden potential and maximizes equipment utilization, uptime and quality. It enables customers to calculate and analyze Overall Equipment Effectiveness measure, based on data collected from their production processes.

How Does It Work?

The ABB Ability™ Manufacturing Operations Management OEE Application calculates Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) by automatically collecting data from field devices, with the option for manual input by operators. The application uses a configured plant and equipment hierarchy, along with downtime classifications, to analyze performance, availability, and quality. During configuration, users are assigned roles, and the plant hierarchy is established. The Downtime Module is configured with classifications and causes, mapped to equipment types, and instances are mapped to units for automatic downtime calculation. After configuration, data collection begins, with a Data Audit mechanism for verification. Plant Managers can use the OEE Analysis Tab to access accurate information on unit availability, performance, and quality, facilitating comparison between units and identification of underperforming assets. Downtime event analysis allows for a drill-down to identify root causes and time lost due to each downtime cause.

Project & My Role

The Problem

OEE marked a significant addition to ABB’s application suite, filling a crucial gap within the broader Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) framework. The introduction of the OEE application represented a strategic move to enhance ABB’s capabilities and provide a more comprehensive solution for optimizing manufacturing operations. This initiative aimed to address specific needs and bring about a more integrated and efficient approach to overall equipment efficiency within the MOM framework, aligning with ABB’s commitment to cutting-edge solutions in industrial automation and management.

My Role

My role in the project, I initially joined the project at its early stages, focusing on information gathering. As the project evolved, my responsibilities expanded to include conducting market analysis and researching potential features for inclusion. My involvement extended to shaping the layout of the application and designing the visual representation of the data it would display. This comprehensive approach allowed me to contribute to various aspects of the project’s development, ensuring a well-rounded and informed execution.
